The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls” is the first time that the irrepressible Kiwi entertainment double act, Jools and Lynda Topp’s extraordinary personal story has been told. The film offers a revealing look into the lives of the World’s only comedic,

country singing, dancing, and yodeling lesbian twin sisters. As well as rarely seen archive footage and home movies, the film features a series of special interviews with some of the Topp’s infamous comedy alter-egos including candid chats with the two

Kens, Camp Mother and Camp Leader, the Bowling Ladies and the Posh Socialite sisters, Prue and Dilly.

Celebrating their half century this year, the Topp Twins have attained a unique status within New Zealand culture, and their fans range from hard core political activists, to sheep farmers and ‘Ladies who Lunch’. Their ability to relate to all kinds of people, and

their natural gift for humour, has helped them cross from the fringes to the mainstream.

It has often been said that if the story of the Twins was fictional nobody would believe it. From rural backwaters to busking on the streets of Auckland, to performances at the Rugby World Cup and Londons West End stage, their appeal is infectious. From

support act to Split Enz, Billy Bragg, and Midnight Oil to headlining their own hugely successful tours in Australia, Canada, the USA and Britain. The twins have morphed from radical activists into Kiwi ‘national treasures’, ‘cultural ambassadors’, and finally, according to the Glasgow Herald, into New Zealand’s ‘finest artistic export since lamb cutlets!’

‘Untouchable Girls’ follows the girls from their happy childhood on a Waikato dairy farm – where they grew up singing to the cows – to the Territorial Army where they quickly became the Vera Lynns of their battalion. They came of age performing on the streets of Auckland during the heady days of the political protest marches in the early 80s, and quickly joined the forefront of progressive social change campaigning for a Nuclear- Free NZ, Maori Land Rights, a halt to the1981 Springbok Tour, and Homosexual Law Reform.

By 1998 only a decade later, Lynda Topp, as Camp Mother, came close to winning the mayoral elections in Auckland, and the Topp Twins were firmly entrenched in the bosom of Kiwi culture with their own prime time TV Series ‘Do Not Adjust Your Twinset’.

THE TOPP TWINS: UNTOUCHABLE GIRLS is a big story. It’s not just the story of two sisters but also of 50 years of New Zealand history. Half a century of cultural changes and the foundation of a national identity. Part concept film, part biopic, part historical record, part comedy, the Twins share their journey from “coming out‟ to Jools’ recent brush with Breast Cancer with much laughter, honesty and wisdom. It is a film about two truly unique New Zealanders which ends up saying as much about us as it does about them.

‘The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls’ is directed by award-winning ex BBC documentary filmmaker, Leanne Pooley. Director of Photography was shared by Leon Narbey (‘Whale Rider’); one of New Zealands most acclaimed cinematographers, and Wayne Vinten, (Best Cinematography NZ Screen Awards 2008). The film was produced by Arani

Cuthbert of Diva Productions, who has also managed the twins for much of their career.

“Music For A While” Starring Jennifer Fletcher, mezzo-soprano and Dan McCoy, pianist, February 4th, 7:30 pm, all seats $25

Jennifer Fletcher and Dan McCoy Perform on February 4th at 7:30 pm

Jennifer Fletcher presents an eclectic programme of music spanning four centuries, from vocal hits of the seventeenth century to modern Broadway classics. Her artistic collaborator, Dan McCoy, will accompany her on this noteworthy journey with the help of a 9-foot Steinway concert grand piano and will also present virtually unheard-of masterpieces written originally for solo harpsichord. More than a standard vocal concert, this staged performance will highlight the duo’s inner thoughts as they discuss their repertoire and the role music plays in our lives, concluding that life itself can indeed be interpreted most succinctly as “Music for a While”.

Jennifer Fletcher, mezzo-soprano, is a fourth year student of Classical Voice at York University in Toronto. Raised in Gravenhurst, Jennifer has been a proud member of the community and has been involved with the Youth and Senior Choirs at Trinity United Church, as well as a former member of the Just 8 Jazz Choir.
Jennifer has studied with vocal coaches Dean Perry and Doreen Uren Simmons. She is currently studying under Catherine Robbin at York University and has been coached in several vocal masterclasses by Norma Burrowes, Leslie Fagan, Bruce Ubakata, Colin Ainsworth, Caroline Schiller and Sophie Roland.
Jennifer has participated in Orillia Kiwanis Music Festivals, Newmarket Voice Festivals and NATS Auditions. In 2010 Jennifer won first place for third year secondary women in the Ontario Chapter Auditions of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. She was the recipient of York Universities Sterling Voice Award in 2010/2011. Last year she achieved the role of Emily in York’s production of The Garden Party. Locally, Jennifer participated in the Muskoka Opera Festival once again. She presented recitals in Gravenhurst and Toronto. In the coming year, Jennifer will be performing the role of the sorceresses witch in York Universities Opera production of Dido and Aeneas in March. In May, she will be on a European Tour singing with York Universities Chamber Choir.

Dan McCoy is a Gravenhurst resident who has earned postgraduate degrees in Musicology and in Harpsichord Performance from the University of Toronto and The Liszt School of Music in Weimar, Germany, respectively. Musicologically speaking, he has presented at international Baroque music conferences in Spain, Germany, and, most recently, in Aberdeen, Scotland; he is also scheduled to speak in June 2012 at McGill University in Montréal about 18th-century composer Geminiani’s unique yet little-discussed composition treatise, Guida Armonica, and its potential application for students of thorough-bass. Dan’s publications include recording reviews for the scholarly journal, Early Music, from Oxford University Press, and his most recent article about the tune, “Fortune My Foe,” which first became popular at public executions in early modern England, can be found in the forthcoming collection of essays entitled “Musical, Cultural, and Religious Networks in Early Modern Europe” from Ashgate Publishing. Dan is currently preparing continuo realisations for a set of sonatas from the Harrach Collection in Austria recently rediscovered in the New York Public Library and to be published by Edition Musiklandschaften based in Hamburg, Germany. Finally, Dan has performed in various venues including the Mellon Estate on Lake Muskoka, the Bachhaus Museum in Eisenach, Germany, Ehrenstein Palace in Ohrdruf, Germany, and at the Sondershausen Palace in Germany. He is currently the Director of Music at Trinity United Church in Gravenhurst and runs a community ukulele group there.

It’s 2003. Thirty-eight year old graphic artist Oliver Fields has just lost his father Hal Fields to cancer, after Oliver’s mother Georgia Fields passed away five years earlier. Oliver is naturally a sullen man due to his growing up relationship with his parents (his mother who had a unique view on life) and watching his parents’ cordial but somewhat distant relationship with each other, but is more so now because of his personal family loss. Oliver embarks on a relationship with Anna, a French actress. Oliver is hoping that his re-energized relationship with Hal following Georgia’s death and Hal’s new outlook on life during that time will show Oliver how to act in a loving relationship. After Georgia’s death, Hal came out of the closet and began to live with a joie de vivre that did not exist before, which included an open relationship with a much younger man named Andy… Written by Huggo

“Buck” presented by Fine Films, November 15th 6pm

Presented by Fine Films November 15th , 6 pm

6 pm Art Show and Refreshments in Trillium Cour

7pm Short Canadian Film followed by feature film.

“Your horse is a mirror to your soul, and sometimes you may not like what you see. Sometimes, you will.” So says Buck Brannaman, a true American cowboy and sage on horseback who travels the country for nine grueling months a year helping horses with people problems.

BUCK, a richly textured and visually stunning film, follows Brannaman from his abusive childhood to his phenomenally successful approach to horses. A real-life “horse-whisperer”, he eschews the violence of his upbringing and teaches people to communicate with their horses through leadership and sensitivity, not punishment.

Buck possesses near magical abilities as he dramatically transforms horses – and people – with his understanding, compassion and respect. In this film, the animal-human relationship becomes a metaphor for facing the daily challenges of life. A truly American story about an unsung hero, BUCK is about an ordinary man who has made an extraordinary life despite tremendous odds.

In the Spring, happily married Gerri, a medical counselor, and Tom, a geologist, tend their allotment. They entertain Gerri’s lonely work colleague Mary, who gets very drunk, and bemoans her disastrous love life. Gerri and Tom enjoy a warm relationship with their community lawyer son Joe, aged 30, who reports that although his friends are getting married, he is still without a partner. In the Summer, Ken comes down to London to spend a weekend with Gerri and Tom. Ken works in a government employment office in Hull, and is Tom’s boyhood friend from their native Derby. He gets very drunk, and bemoans his tragic, lonely life. The next day, while Gerri celebrates the sunshine at the allotment, Tom, Ken, Joe and a neighbor enjoy a game of golf. A barbeque party follows. Mary arrives late and flustered in her newly-acquired second-hand car. She is frosty towards an innocently amorous Ken, and flirtatious in an urgent and serious way towards Joe, her junior by a generation. In the Autumn, Gerri and Tom return home from the allotment to enjoy a pleasant surprise from Joe. He has hidden his new partner Katie behind a door. Katie is an occupational therapist, and Gerri and Tom like her immediately. But Mary, who has already been invited to tea, is instantly jealous and hostile towards Katie, and behaves very rudely. Although they all sympathize with her car troubles, Mary’s behavior towards Katie leaves a bad odor with the good-natured Gerri and Tom.In the Winter, Gerri, Tom and Joe drive up to Derby for the funeral of the wife of Tom’s elder brother, Ronnie. Ronnie’s aggressive, estranged son Carl arrives late at the crematorium. Back at Ronnie’s house, Carl is confrontational with his father, and with Tom and Joe; he causes other mourners to leave suddenly, and then stomps off in a rage. Gerri and Tom bring Ronnie back to London. Whilst they are at the allotment, Mary shows up at the house unannounced, and in a fraught state. She drinks tea and smokes cigarettes with a bemused Ronnie. On their return, Gerri and Tom are far from pleased to see Mary, especially as Joe is due to arrive with Katie for a family dinner. But after Mary has broken down apologetically, Gerri invites her to stay, albeit reluctantly. At the dinner table, while Gerri and Tom reminisce about the round-the-world back-packing days of their youth, and Katie and Joe look forward to their impending trip to Paris, Ronnie quietly enjoys his beer and his dinner and Mary faces the sad emptiness of her passing life.

George Canyon, October 11th, 7:30 pm

George Canyon Live at the Opera House

He has sold over 250,000 albums and his critically acclaimed music continues to grow with every record. In 2008 multi-platinum artist and pop/rock icon Richard Marx signed on to produce Canyon’s “What I Do” album. The record yielded 7 hit singles including “Just Like You”, the album’s debut single, which was written for George’s son, Kale. “I was driving my kids to school when the song came on the radio. Kale was in the backseat with his sister and I looked in the rear view mirror. He had the biggest smile on his face, but he didn’t say a word. As a parent there is no better feeling than when your kid is speechless with joy.”  His young daughter, Madi got her own song too, which appeared George’s “Somebody Wrote Love” album (2006) “Madi’s Song” continues to be one of Canyon’s most requested cuts at his live shows.

Marx and Canyon teamed up again to write and record songs for the 2011 album “Better Be Home Soon.” The enhanced digital version of the album includes songs written and co-written by the likes of Marx, Matt Scannell, Johnny Reid and Kenny Rogers. “I was honored when Richard phoned me to say that he and Kenny Rogers had written a song especially for me. It was one of those ‘breathtaking moments’ that I have been lucky enough to have a few of, in my career and life.” And the song? “It’s called ‘When Love Is All You’ve Got’. Richard and I actually recorded it as a duet. It has a powerful message that resonates well in times of economic strife and we felt that it was a story that had to be told. We went deep with the songwriting in this record. There are some great ballads, but there are also a lot of fun tracks. I think it’s important to achieve a balance on a record and take the listener through some peaks and valleys.” says Canyon.

When George Canyon is performing live onstage, he is most at home. He has the entire audience in the palm of his hand and you just can’t help but want to be a part of his unique family. He is respected and well-loved and one of the most successful entertainers in the country today.
